Chandel, April 05 2018:
Close on the heels of the State Government announcing conversion of 6(six) aided colleges to full-fledged Government colleges, the Naga Students Union, Chandel (NSUC) in a statement today expressed deep resentment over the
Cabinet's 'arbitrary' decision to sideline South - East Manipur College, Komlathabi (SEMCO ) from conversion to full - fledged college.
The State Government overlooked the MOU signed on March 12, 2003 wherein the previous Government had given assurance to convert SEMCO into full-fledged college soon along with 6(six) valley based aided colleges, the statement asserted.
Subsequently, the Government after a gap of 15 years since the MOU signed, has unilaterally approved conversion of the 6(six) aided colleges to full-fledged colleges during its cabinet meeting held on March 28, however SEMCO Komlathabi was left out, said NSUC in its statement.
It is a matter of great concern and surprise that the Government has been avoiding the genuine demand and voice of the student community by not standing up to the MOU signed, the NSUC said.
If one were to reflect upon past responses and actions of the Government on the matter, the conversion of full-fledged colleges revolves around the valley based colleges, said NSUC questioningthe reason why it (Govt) has left out SEMCO, one of the oldest colleges.
SEMCO was established on January 2, 1981, granted permanent affiliation in 1992 and attained UGC recognition in 1994 .
The recurring grant in-aid extended to the college since December 2011 has helped in the functioning of the college however, not enough to sustain the college and meet the growing demands to maintain standard, the students' union furthered.
The salary of over 90+ staff are paid meagrely.
Presently, the strength of students enrolled is 790 .
The college authority has waved many difficult situations for more than 30 years to acquire today's status.
It has also produced a number of doctors, engineers, Government officers and
international sport players, the union apprised.
The NSUC in its statement urged the State Government to reconsider its cabinet decision and include South East Manipur College (SEMCO) Komlathabi as one among the already announced colleges to be
converted into full - fledged colleges.
