Imphal, September 04 2021:
Expressing strong resentment against alleged indifferent attitude of the government to translate into action assurance given for recruitment of Meetei Mayek (MM) teachers, Meetei Mayek TET Supplementary Successful Candidate Association (MEMATESCA) has cautioned of launching protest if the government fails to initiate necessary process for recruiting Meetei Mayek teachers within September 10 .
Speaking in this regard, MEMATESCA secretary Okram Nanda pointed out that Manipuri language has been included in the eighth schedule of the Indian constitution for the last thirty years and Meetei Mayek is being taught to students for more than 16 years now.
Though initiatives for inclusion of Meetei Mayek in the Indian currency notes are being taken up by the Union government, the government of Manipur is yet to finalise process for recruitment of Meetei Mayek teachers to replace the Bengali teachers.
Instead, the government conducts training programme from time to time for the said teachers, he pointed out.
Recalling that the government conducted Meetei Mayek TET supplementary examination in 2013 and 2016, Nanda said that the government had given assurance of recruiting MM teachers in 2013 and recently in 2021 by the present education minister S Rajen.
The successful MM TET teachers have been waiting for fulfilment of the government's assurance for seven-eight years.
Such assurances could not be trusted until the government takes a cabinet decision or issue a notice for recruitment of Meetei Mayek teachers.
Maintaining that Meetei Mayek TET 2013-2016 successful candidates could not be compared to successful candidates of TET general, Nanda said that Meetei Mayek TET successful candidates have been demanding the government for recruiting Meetei Mayek teachers since 2017.Meanwhile, MEELAL president Yanglem Biren told The People's Chronicle that the government should at least appoint one teacher who is well versed in Meetei Mayek in one school.
Manipuri subject teachers are teaching the subject in Meetei Mayek after completing a simple 10-day basic foundation course and the system will have many implications in the long run, he said.
