Accused killer surrenders

Imphal, May 02 2011:
A 31 year old man, who works as a driver in Manipur Police Commandos and accused in the shooting one of his friends to death on the night of April 30 at Wangjing Lamding under Thoubal district, surrendered to the police along with arms.
The accused identified as Likmabam Bombom alias Rabi (31) of Wangjing Bazar under Imphal West district surrendered at Thoubal police station along an unauthorised pistol in his possession and which was used in committing the crime.
Following a brawl, Bombom opened fire from his unauthorised pistol hitting his friend Nahakpam Basanta (35) of Wangjing Nasikhong Leikai on his chest on Saturday night.
Basanta was rushed to the hospital but he passed away en route.
Bombom reportedly took out the pistol and opened fire in the presence of four/five other persons following a heated argument over the genuineness of the weapon.
In protest against the killing, road block had been enforced along Imphal-Moreh Road at Wangjing yesterday morning.
On the other hand, an autorickshaw driver, who is a suspect in the killing of Roma Devi was found death under mysteriously condition last night.
The autorickshaw driver identified as Thoudam Sanjoy alias Itao (38) s/o Khogen of Khabam Makha Leikai under Heingang Police Station of Imphal East district was brought to RIMS Hospital for treatment at around 2 pm in the intervening night of May 1 and 2 .
The family members said that Sanjoy was found lying unconscious on his bed at around 1 pm.
However, a the JAC, which was formed in protest against the killing of Roma Devi, has claimed that Sanjoy took his own life on account of his alleged involvement in the killing.
Heingang Police station has registered a case of unnatural death.
But the police have not yet given any definite comment over the death.
Co-convenor of the JAC Bobby Devi has informed that as one of the suspects in the killing of Roma Devi, autorickshaw driver Sanjoy was supposed to give his statement to the police today.
As he did not appear to give his statement to the police last Monday, a fresh summon order had been issued for appearing today.
But before that he took his own life.
Addressing a public meeting at Khabam Mayai Leikai Ibemcha High School ground today, the co-convenor further informed that mobile phone number of Sanjoy was among the call lists in the mobile phone handset of the deceased woman.
Over and above this, Roma Devi, who used to indulge in giving out monetary loan at certain interest rate in Mantripukhri area had reserved and hired the autorickshaw of Sanjoy at least two times.
It may be recalled here that the body of 34-year old Leishangthem Ongbi Roma Devi (34) of Kontha Khabam Mayai Leikai Ibemcha High School Leirak was found at a spot in between Kontha Khabam and Kontha Ahallup in the afternoon of April 23 after she was reported missing since April 3 .
Quoting the comment of another autorickshaw driver identified as Ratan of Luwangshangbam, who is a friend of Sanjoy, Bobby Devi said both the friends met at Luwangshangbam Khongnangkhong last night.
During the meeting, Ratan advised Sanjoy to go and give his statement to the police.
But Sanjoy did not show any sign of agreement.
In addition to this, the efforts made by the family members of Sanjoy to perform the last rites of Roma Devi on the sly had increased the level of suspicion over the possible involvement of Sanjoy in the killing, the co-convenor.
At the end of the meeting, it has been resolved that no interference would be given in performing the last rites of Sanjoy but no one in the locality would participate in any other ceremonies related to his death.
Giving 10 days time to the Government for producing all other who are involved in the killing, the meeting also appealed to the police for support in the investigation being conducted by the JAC.
Furthermore, the meeting unanimously decided to extend continue support to the JAC in future course of action to be taken up.
