Congress sweeps ADC poll

Imphal, October 31 2011:
The Congress emerged victorious in both the Autonomous District Council (ADC) constituencies that went to poll on October 24 in Manipur, the results of which were declared today.
By-elections were held in Chingai Autonomous District Council constituency in Ukhrul district and Phaibung Khullen ADC constituency in Senapati district.
The poll was conducted in the face of the stiff opposition and ban by the United Naga Council (UNC) and its federating units.
Congress candidate Wilson Satsang won the Chingai ADC seat by defeating his nearest rival and Independent candidate M Ningtam by 241 votes.
Wilson Satsang got 1081 vote while M Ningtam secured only 839 votes.
The total number of votes in the constituency is 3963, out of which only 1912 were validated and nine votes were rejected.
In Senapati district, Congress candidate Saloni got 1579 votes, while his nearest rival Veini and Independent candidate secured1266 in the Phaibung Khullen seat.
Saloni won the seat by a margin of 313 votes.
Out of 2832 total votes, valid votes were 2805 and 27 voters were rejected in that constituency.
The concerned Returning Officers (ROs) handed over the certificates to the respective successful candidates.
Elections to all the Autonomous District Councils (ADCs) in Manipur were held last year in two phases but due to the opposition to the ADC poll by the UNC some constituencies could not go to the polls.
