Imphal, May 29 2022:
Six student bodies have urged the government to set up a state population commission for long-term monitoring of the non-local population in Manipur as well as the changes associated with it.
They further urged for setting up a state level and district level committee to check up on non-locals, while also demanding a National Registrar of Citizens for Manipur with a specific base year.
Action should be taken up against illegal migrants including detection and deportation.
Manipur is a small state with many indigenous communities who have, from time-to-time stood up to save the state from being suppressed by outsiders, whether they may be from other Indian states or from another country.
If no legal action is taken up against the, illegal migrants, the indigenous population of the state would soon disappear.
In a joint statement, presidents of All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU), Apunba Ireipakki Maheiroi Singpang Lup (AIMS), Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM), Kangleipak Students Association (KSA), Manipuri Students' Federation (MSF) and Students' Union of Kangleipak (SUK) drew attention of the government towards the attempts being made to rewrite history and mislead the future generation with regard to the state's integrity, which our forefathers sacrificed their lives to protect.
They then demanded establishment of a state population commission to monitor the non-local population for long term and the changes associated.
As such, the six student bodies drew the attention of the state government towards the illegal immigrants who are threatening and trying to rewrite the history of the state and urged for initiating strict action on such matters.
