Senapati, April 25 2019: The Mayangkhang General in association with the Justice Committee on Anglo-Manipuri War, 1891 Martyrs and Freedom Fighters of Kangleipak (Manipur) paid rich floral tribute to known and unknown soldiers of Manipur at Thangal General Ecological Park, Mayangkhang in Senapati district today.

The 128th commemoration of Mayangkhang battle was held under the theme, "Commemoration, Preservation and Protection" .

PY Kaping, chief of Takeimai village, YK Regent, chairman of Mayangkhang General, BK John, chief of Ningthoupham village, Irish, chairperson of Mayangkhang Area Women Welfare Association and H Ibotombi Khuman, chairman, Justice Committee attended the event as presidium members.

A two minute silence was observed followed by floral tribute to the freedom fighters.

Vice president of the Justice Committee in his welcome note stated that the history mentioned the Thangal tribe to have confronted the mighty army of the British empire from entering into their land.

The vice president considered that Charai Thangal of the then independent Manipur must be a brave soldier during their time.

Retired Prof N Joykumar, as a resource person, said that the princely State of Manipur was well to do one and was independent.

The year 1891 was a turning point with people of the State irrespective of caste and tribe rose against the colonial rule and fought, he said.

The British soldiers were believed to have entered into the State through 3 different directions � Burma, Dimapur and Jiribam.

They were met and confronted with army of courageous forefathers, he added.

According to the resource persons, battle with the British soldiers took place at the proper Mayangkhang area.

The British burned down the village seven times.

However, people continued to fight back.

Leaders of the village were reportedly kidnapped and taken to Andaman & Nicobar Island, they said.

YK Kaping, president of the Thangal Union decried 'lack' State Govt actions to promote the sacrifices made by people of the land.
