Imphal, August 23 2015:
CPI Manipur State Council observed its 68th foundation day at Irabot Bhavan here today.
Speaking on the occasion, CPI Manipur State Council secretary Dr M Nara said that the party was set up by Jana-neta Hijam Irabot on August 23,1948 to fight for the cause of toiling masses against the then repressive regime.
After India became independent in 1947, an elected Government was established in Manipur.
In tandem with re-organisation of States, there arose a proposal to form a new State called Purvanchal Pradesh by merging together Lushai Hills, Cachar, Tripura and Manipur with its capital at Silchar.
But Hijam Irabot opposed the proposal and led a strong mass movement against the same proposal.
This ultimately led Irabot to go underground, Dr Nara said.
Hijam Irabot was committed to safeguard the territorial integrity of Manipur by forging unity among the hills and valley, he added.
CPI Manipur State Council deputy secretary N Mangi said that a permit system was followed under the Manipur Constitution Act for non-local people entering or leaving Manipur but the permit system was abolished in 1950 .
The gathering observed two minutes' silence in honour of Sapam Robinhood who was killed in police action in the course of a protest agitation for enforcement of ILPS or similar mechanism in Manipur.
Party's secretariat member L Iboyaima, A Lala, deputy secretary (organisation) L Thoiren and B Sharma were also present at the function.
