community hall, Imphal West
today called for strengthening
environmental movement in the
State.
The celebration
organised by The Women and
Earth (WE), Manipur and

World Earth Day was
founded by United States

Day in 1970 and since then it
has been celebrated world-wide as an annual event on
April 22 of every year.
He
contended that reduction, re-use and recycle of plastic,
particularly polythene bags
can be feasibly applied in
everyone's life as such initiatives will go a long way
towards minimising plastic
pollution in the State to a great
extent.
He appealed to all to
cooperate with the endeavours
to stop plastic usage and protect environment from various
potential threats.
Retired Professor
Mohendro conveyed that the
initiative of WE to celebrate the
World Earth Day is a humble
beginning towards the cause of
saving the earth.
Observing that the trend of
degeneration in the State is very
fast, he underscored the importance of reviving the good old
values of humanhood in the
present society.
He also urged
the women to imbibe the sense
of womanhood in the process
of elevating women empowerment as the standard of a
society is seen from the status
of women.
He called upon the
people to grow more trees for
ensuring a safe environment.
Joykumar pointed out that
there have been disturbing
changes taking place in the environment of the State due to
certain harmful activities of human beings.
He said that
although the State witnessed
dying of animals, including
rare ponies in large scale during the last few years due to
consumption of plastic substances and polythene bags,
there has been no significant
decrease in the usage of plastic bags by the people.
