Expert body on MDC Act formed

The State Government has formed a five-member Expert Committee to monitor implementation of Manipur (Hill Areas) District Council Act, 1971 and Manipur (Village Authority in Hill Areas) Act, 1956 as well as other related Rules for submitting a report in this regard within 90 days.
The Expert Committee, of which Max Phajang, former Registrar of Gauhati High Court, Imphal Bench is the Chairman, has been formed following an order issued by Ameising Luikham, Additional Secretary of Tribal Affairs and Hills, Government of Manipur.
Other members of the Expert Committee include Dr H Khamkhenthang, former Director of Tribal Research Institute (TRI); K Dalmei, former Joint Director of TRI and L Kalkho Mao, Deputy Director of Tribal Affairs and Hills.
It is said that the Expert Committee shall examine Manipur (Hill Areas) District Council Act 1971 and Rules framed thereof including the various amendments and identify all ineffective and obsolete sections contain therein for recommending suitable amendments.
The Committee shall also examine the Manipur (Village Authorities in Hill Areas) Act, 1956 and recommend linkages between the Manipur (Hill Areas) Act, 1971 and Rules and Manipur (Village Authorities in Hill Areas) Act, 1956 and Rules framed there under in order to link and harmonize the functioning of the two laws.
The Committee shall submit its report and recommendations to the State Government within 90 days, the order said.
