Imphal, June 18 2021:
Imphal police station on Thursday evening arrested a man for spreading false information about the ongoing mass Covid-19 vaccination drive on social media platforms.
The arrested person has been identified as Khoisnam Shantikumar (41) s/o Jila of Lairenjam Awang Leikai.
According to a police report, the government has been urging people to get vaccinated and also stay at home, while taking up all precautionary measures such as wearing of facemasks, gloves, etc., to prevent the spread of the virus.
Amid this, Shantikumar uploaded a video on his Facebook page spreading false information about the Covid-19 vaccine and undermining the advisories on various precautionary measures being taken up.
The video, which went viral, led to hesitation on the part of the people to get the vaccine.
In this regard, Imphal PS registered an FIR and conducted an investigation, following which Shantikumar was arrested on Thursday evening.
He was produced before CJM Imphal West on Friday, which remanded him to 5 days in police custody.
The report further conveyed that efforts are being made to arrest those who commented on his (Shantikumar) post in support of his false claims.
As such, the police appealed to the public not to believe such fake news on social media platforms and to adhere to Covid-19 SOPs, while getting the vaccine as soon as possible.
