Imphal, August 09, 2014:
All Manipur Working Journalists' Union (AMWJU) will be hosting an Executive Council Meeting of Indian Journalists' Union (IJU), an apex body of Indian journalists in November at Imphal.
Speaking to media persons in this connection, Wangkhemcha Shaymjai, president of AMWJU said that the government has provided assurance that it will provide all possible help in organising the meeting which will last for three days and informed that prior to the proposed meeting, a four-member team of AMWJU led by its vice-president Ratan Luwangcha will take part in a meeting of IJU to be held at Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh from September 11-17. He stated that the AMWJU delegation will highlight difficulties being faced by journalists of the State while performing their duties during the meeting.
Maintaining that journalists here in the State have been working against all odds and low salaries, he exuded confidence that Majithia Wage Board for journalists will be implemented in the State soon.
An understanding has been already brought about between AMWJU, government and newspapers proprietors to implement the recommendation of the board at the earliest, he added.
He also informed that the Supreme Court had directed to implement the Majithia Wage Board for the welfare of journalists on October 11, 2011 but the same has not implemented so far.
Asserting that the gazette notice for implementation of the board will be out within the coming week, he further informed that the government has already given nod for setting up of a press colony for journalists at Lamphel.
He went on to say that there is a high possibility for setting up of a press academy in the State as well.
