Imphal, July 09 2019:
Noted Environmentalist Dr Kh Shamungou has said that using chemicals and fertilizers to grow crops due to weak monsoon has resulted in the death of several sparrows, pigeons and other birds that consume the crops.
It will be an uphill task to control the death of such birds as the chemicals and fertilizers that are mixed are fatal to the birds, said Dr Shamungou and appealed all the farmers to use a method that will keep the birds away from such conventionally grown foods.
L Biswajeet Meitei, Managing trustee of People for Animal Manipur also contended that farmers should consult with experts of Agriculture Department to save the birds that are preying on the insects that destroy the crops.
Subject Matter Specialist of Agriculture Department, Ak Chitaranjan Singh suggested that installation of scarecrows and hanging of tins in the field can be helpful in scaring the birds away.
He then urged all the farmers to use green pesticide instead of toxic ones to not only protect their crops from pests and insects but also save the birds that consume the crops.
