Imphal, June 07 2021:
Despite various initiatives taken up by the government, including imposition of curfew, to curb the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic, Monday saw a sudden surge in traffic movement in the heart of the capital indicating that many are not adhering to the restrictions.
The increased vehicular movement from early morning made it seemed as if there was no curfew in place.
Traffic jams were witnessed in Keishampat junction, along Wahengbam Leikai and Nagamapal route.
Police set up a mobile post near Uripok Chakrikom under the BT flyover to pull up curfew violators, resulting in further congestions.
However, only a few numbers of four-wheelers could be spotted detained by the police teams stationed at different parts of the capital city while many high-end vehicles moved around without any obstruction.
In sharp contrast, two-wheeler riders not included in any of the exempted categories were stopped and slapped monetary penalty.
Speaking to The People's Chronicle in this regard, Imphal Police OC N Ingocha explained that majority of the detained people were those who intentionally ventured outside knowing there is a curfew in place or were found violating traffic rules.
The government has exempted only certain categories and as such, those found moving around without a valid reason will be detained and fined, in addition to initiation of appropriate legal action, he conveyed.
