The 73rd Hiroshima Day was observed today at Manipur Press Club here under the aegis of the Indo-Japan Friendship Association.
The gathering observed two minutes silence in honour of all the people killed on August 6, 1945 when an atom bomb was dropped on Hiroshima city.
A peace declaration and a message given by the Mayor of Hiroshima wvere read out at the gathering.
Speaking at the gathering, Indo-Japan Friendship Association president A Nandakumar said that Imphal was the only city in the whole country which suffered large scale casualties in the Second World War.
Imphal city has been observing Hiroshima Day since 1990 and it has been acknowledged by the Mayor of Hiroshima city.
Moreover, many Manipuri students not only participated but also won distinctions and awards in the International Peace Painting competition held at Hiroshima, Nandakumar said.
He added that they have been lobbying with the Government of Japan t6 develop Imphal as a sister city of Hiroshima.
