Imphal, May 05 2022:
Following assurance of delivering justice in the death case of Arambam Nanao given by chief minister N Biren to the JAC, post mortem examination of body was conducted at RIMS mortuary on Thursday.
However, in-spite of post mortem conducted with video coverage in the presence of a magistrate, the JAC formed against the incident is still refusing to claim the body until all the personnel involved in the arrest and subsequent death of Nanao are arrested.
Speaking to the media at RIMS mortuary, JAC advisor L Memma informed that the JAC members met with chief minister N Biren on Thursday during which they demanded identity of the complainant behind the arrest of Nanao.
They also asked the government to award befitting punishment to all those, who accompanied SI Jitendro in making the arrest, and to provide a suitable government job to Nanao's widow to ensure livelihood of the bereaved family.
They agreed to conduct the post mortem following the assurance of the CM, she said.
Memma, however, said that they will not claim the body until all those involved in Nanao's case are arrested.
She strongly condemned misuse of power by the SI while expressing disbelief that the OC of Imphal PS claimed of having no knowledge of the arbitrary arrest by police in plain clothes and keeping the victim in the lockup for several hours.
While condemning the alleged custodial death of goldsmith Arambam Nanao after arrest on May 2 by a team of Imphal West district police led by SI Th Jitendro, who came in plain clothes, Committee on Human Rights (COHR), Manipur has demanded dismissal of the police personnel involved and punish them stringently according to law of the land.
In a release, COHR secretary publicity G Dayananda Sharma said that people of Manipur have been protesting against the brutalities of armed forces and police personnel towards the civilian population and violation of human rights under the veil of Black laws like AFSPA and UAPA.
Amid the demand for repeal of AFSPA from the state, the brutal killing of goldsmith Nanao after torturing by police and misusing the laws has created fear among the people.
As such, suspending the sub-inspector involved in the killing will not suffice, he asserted.
Appealing to the government for taking stringent actions against the culprits involved in the killing, Dayananda shared the pain and grief of the bereaved family.
COHR will support any movement launched by JAC so formed so that justice is delivered, he assured.
