Imphal, August 30 2011:
MP, Dr T Meinya in the Parliament today urged the Union Government to resolve the ongoing impasse between the SHDDC and the state government which has given great hardship to the people by the former's indefinite blockade on the two NHs.
Calling the attention of the Union Government, Meinya told the Parliament that Manipur is once again under siege by the ongoing indefinite blockade on the only two lifelines NHs by SHDDC from 1 August and a counter blockade called by the UNC.
"These blockades have made the lives of common people in the state really miserable.
Availability of essential commodities including life-saving drugs and petroleum products are seriously affected.
Their prices have gone sky high.
He said, "Putting the lives of common people at ransom is not the right path, whatever might be the genuineness of any demand" .
He further told the House, "We can sincerely make an attempt to find a solution through negotiation.
The demand of SHDDC is four decades old.
The Parliament had passed the Manipur (Hill Areas) Autonomous District Council Act 1971.This Act provides for creation of six Autonomous District Councils and five districts have already been created.
Only Sadar Hills District was left out.
The primary responsibility of the Government is to protect the life and property of its citizens.
I sincerely urge upon the Union Government to intervene and resolve the impasse immediately" .
