Jiri sensitized to crimes against women

A mass awareness campaign on 'Crimes against Women' was held at Town hall, Jiribam in Imphal East District on December 17 .
Organised jointly organised by Handicapped Rehabilitation Organisation (HRO), Women Action for Development (WAD) and United NGOs Mission-Manipur (UNM-M), the inaugural function of the campaign was attended by Th.Ibomcha Singh, Up- Adhyaksha of Imphal East diostrict as Chief Guest; Sobita Mongshatabam, Secretary General of WAD, as Functional President while W.Basanta Advocate, L.Pishak, Secretary of NLF Chairperson, Bishnupur District; R.Boipu Koireng, Coordinator pf UNM-M and Jina, Proprietor of Our Rest House, Khurai as resource persons.
Giving the keynote address of the function, Ms.Ranita, Secy of H.R.O stated that such awareness campaign was organised in Jiribam considering the ever increasing rate of crimes against women and children in the sub division.
She hoped organising such programmes would be able to create awareness among the people.

Participating in the campaign as one of the resource person, L.Pishak Singh, Secy of New Life Foundation, said that rapid increase of human trafficking, crimes related to women and children could not be solved without transforming the society from the grass root system and political structure.
Advocate W.Basanta, who spoke on the topic of International Humanitarian law, stated that both Armed State and Non State actors should strictly adhere to the International norms and principles while engaging in the armed conflict situation.
Maximum care should be maintained not to inflict harm on the civilian especially women and children.
If a signatory nation fails to deliver its international obligation, then it affects civilian population.
Therefore, it calls for the people to collectively response against any forms of rights violations by the State.
Lily Irom, a resident of Jiribam, stated that most of the Govt.Institutions such as schools, PHC, water supply, and other basic amenities are not functioning properly.
She added that since the Govt.teachers, doctors, nurses are not attending regularly; substitute individuals who are not fully qualified are operating at a given situation.
.RBoipu Koireng Coordinator of UNM-M, explained that Violence against women and children could be in the form of physical and psychological.
Comparing against the national rate of conviction which stands at 84%, Manipur state stood at just 4% with regards to crimes against women and children.
Sobita Mongshatabam stated that AFSPA has been in place in Manipur and North Eastern States of India for the last 60 years with a political agenda.
The impunity created by AFSPA is leading to increasing crimes against women and children.
She urged the community to be vigilant and united in the fight against crimes committed against women and children.
Th.Ibomcha Up - Adhyaksha Imphal East District appealed to the public to be united in the struggle for bringing a develop society.
He also encouraged the women in general and the victims in particular to rise against all odds and bring a better society.
