Imphal, March 13 2023:
The Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) has urged the government authority to set up the state population commission at the earliest along with implementing it in letter and spirit.
Addressing media persons at the Checkon office of Committee of Civil Societies Kangleipak (CCSK) on Monday, COCOMI coordinator Jitendra Ningomba stated that illegal migrants settling in the state have been creating undesired problems to the indigenous people.
In order to prevent entry of illegal migrants into the state, COCOMI had been exerting pressure on the state government for setting up a state population commission which the government had assured to look into.
However, the government has not been able to translate its assurance into action till date and as such it has given an adverse impact on the indigenous people, he added.
Jitendra also pointed out the need to update the National Register of Citizens to identify indigenous people and non natives in the state.
The COCOMI coordinator while expressing regret over the impact of global warming reaching the state following encroachment in reserved forest area, protected forests and wetlands, said that the government needs to take up stringent actions against encroachers and conduct eviction drive with the support from the central government, if necessary.
