Imphal, September 30 2022:
Coalition Against Drugs & Alcohol (CADA) in association with other organisations continued to stage sit-in protests and shouted slogans at various places on Friday, denouncing the government's decision to legalise liquor in the state.
Kodompokpi Mayai Leikai Nisha Bandh Association and CADA Imphal West District Committee jointly staged a sit-in protest at Kodompokpi Mayai Leikai on Friday, wherein the protestors shouted slogans against legalisation of liquor and said that would further harm the society and influence the children and youth to abuse liquor and drugs from an early age.
Similar sit-ins were also staged by Yairipok Khoirom Nupi Lup and CADA at Yairipok Khoirom, Thoubal district and Hiyanglam Wabagai Tera Pishak Apunba Meira Paibi Lup and CADA Kakching District Committee at Hiyanglam Wabagai Tera Pishak, Kakching district, during which the protestors highlighted the sufferings faced by widows and demanded the government to withdraw its decision to legalise liquor at the earliest.
Meanwhile, All Manipur Muslim Development Committee (AMMDC) has demanded the government to withdraw its decision to legalise liquor in the interest of the youth and future generation.
In a statement released by its president Pusham Sayeed Ahamad, the Committee demanded the government to produce a white paper before going ahead with the whole legalisation process, considering the decades of protests and struggles launched by the mothers, clubs and organisations for prohibiting liquor in the state.
The legalisation is a threat to the survival of many communities residing in a small state like Manipur and would further abet crimes against women and children.
As such, AMMDC demanded the government to withdraw its decision failing which various intense agitations would be launched with like-minded organisations of the state like CADA, Nupi Samaj and others, the statement warned.
