Imphal, April 30 2014:
Different bridges connecting Imphal East and Imphal West districts today witnessed heavy traffic movement with the closure of Sanjenthong and Thumbuthong bridges.
As the two bridges were barricaded for renovation, most of the vehicles were seen diverted towards Minuthong, Bamon Leikai bridge and Lamlong bridge.
It may be mentioned that Sanjenthong bridge has been closed down to upgrade the 40-year-old bridge to a four-lane modern bridge with funds from DoNER.
On the other hand, passing of vehicles on newly constructed Thumbuthong bridge was again suspended today as earth works on both the ends of the bridge were yet to complete.
Moreover, the bridge is not likely to bear the massive traffic diversions from Sanjenthong even after the completion of earth works as the connecting roads are too narrow.
Talking to The Sangai Express, some Imphal denizens have expressed their desire to construct a flyover over Sanjenthong to reduce traffic woes during rush hours.
They said that as the bridge is one of the most important routes which connects Imphal East and Imphal West districts, there is need for maintaining best quality and making the bridge broader.
The bridge usually witnesses extremely heavy traffic whenever any important function is held in Imphal East area.
