Governor urged to open Imphal-Moreh highway

Imphal, May 26 2023: Meetei Council Moreh (MCM) has urged Governor Anusuiya Uikey to open the Imphal-Moreh highway, which has been blocked fol-lowing the communal clash.

A six-member delega-tion of MCM called on the Governor on Thursday and submitted a memorandum in this regard.

Interacting with the media after meeting the Governor, MCM assistant secretary K Manju said that they met the Governor on behalf of the displaced Meetei residents of Moreh, whose houses were burned down by Kuki mob on May 3 evening.

They confided to the Governor about how Meetei personnel of Manipur police and commandos in Moreh are barred from discharging their duties.

Taking advantage of the absence of Meetei people and state police force, Kuki residents of Moreh are loot-ing properties of Meetei un-abated, he said while adding that they sought intervention of the Governor to open the highway and rehabilitate the Meetei residents by deploying additional state security forc-es and empowering them to protect lives and properties.

They also urged the Governor to allow state's forces to assist central forces in protecting the highway and also to pro-vide adequate compensation to the displaced people.

Manju also informed that the Governor assured to place their plight to the state and central government for early intervention and conveyed them that the government is monitoring the activities of Kuki militants and if they do continue to violate the cease-fire ground rules then the Central government will do the needful to restore peace.
