Imphal, November 23 2015:
Revealing that media persons who are covering news of the ongoing Sangai Festival 2015 were unnecessarily harassed by security personnel, All Manipur Working Journalist Union (AMWJU) President Wangkhemcha Shyamjai urged the Manipur Government and the authorities to look into the matter at the earliest and threatened to boycott the festival if the issue is not addressed at the earliest.
In a press meet held at Manipur Press Club, Imphal on Monday, Wangkhemcha Shyamjai stated that security personnel have unnecessarily detained and harassed media persons who were covering two programmes held at the same time.
In spite of showing their press cards, the media persons are forced to exit through Andro Parking road and again enter from the main gate while covering programme at the Chandrakriti Auditorium and Manipur Film Development Corporation (MFDC).
The security personnel also unnecessarily caused disruptions in the vehicular movements of media persons, said Wangkhemcha Shyamjai.
He appealed the State Government and Tourism Department to let media persons have free access and movements to cover the festival.
In previous Sangai Festivals, media persons were allowed to cover news with their I-cards provided by DIPR and AMWJU, said Shyamjai.
A team comprising AMWJU members will meet Chief Minister O Ibobi on Tuesday and if he fails to give a clarification, AMWJU will be compelled to boycott the Sangai Festival, said Shyamjai.
