COHR decries

The Committee on Human Rights (COHR) Manipur has vehemently condemned the custodial death of one Md Abdul Gaffar alias Sayeed Nongyaimayum, s/o Md Babumacha of Usoipokpi Makha Thararok Leikai, Thoubal district, who was pulled up by a combined team of troops of 26 Assam Rifles and Thoubal commandos on December 20 and was later found dead.
COHR Manipur, in a a statement issued today, also condemned the arrest of Abdul without necessary warrant or reason.
In addition to the fake encounters carried out by the army and paramilitary forces, it is well known among all that the State police are also involved in killing innocent people in numerous fake encounters or extrajudicial killings, it said.
The statement added that the custodial killing of Md Abdul, which came after a along gap to numerous cases of fake encounters, extrajudicial executions, involuntarily forced disappearance and custodial killing etc following the high profile July 23, Khwairamband Bazar case, is a serious concern.
Together with the masses, COHR Manipur will endorse any democratic movement launched by the JAC constituted against the custodial death of Abdul Gaffar demanding punishment of the police and army personnel involved in the incident.
It said that only proper investigation and awarding exemplary punishment to the guilty security personnel will ease the suffering of the victim's family, instead of letting off such cases by giving ex-gratia to the victim families.
