Imphal, September 22 2021: The daily positivity rate fell below 5 per cent for the first time after five months on Wednesday even as government bulletins reported one fatality and 171 new positive cases of Covid-19 out of 3544 samples tested, registering a positivity rate of 4.83 per cent against 6,56 per cent recorded on Tuesday.

The second wave of Covid-19 began in the state in April and the graph picked up in a fast pace crossing the 5 per cent positivity rate threshold in the second half of the month.

The highest single day positivity rate during the second wave was recorded on May 22 at 23.93 per cent.

Test positivity rate below 5 per cent is considered essential to bring down the transmission rate.

However, considering the low test capacity and fluctuating positivity rate that has been witnessing in the past few days, it is not sure if the situation will improve rapidly.

With the 171 newly infected cases recorded on Wednesday, the active cases rose to 2214 from 2174 on the previous day.

As of Wednesday evening, 531 beds including 107 ICU/HDU beds are available in different hospitals.

There is no updated information on bed vacancy in other facilities but as of Tuesday evening 2793 beds were available in different Covid Care Centres and 400 beds (24 ICU/HDU) in district hospitals and CHCs.

So far, the state has recorded 89,641 positive cases and 1462 fatalities since the beginning of the second wave of the pandemic.

The current month recorded 5108 new cases and 54 fatalities out of which 1344 new cases and 19 fatalities were added in the last seven days alone.
