CM launches Loktak Lake clean up campaign

Chief minister N Biren launched Long Boom Excavator at Sendra, Loktak Lake on Monday, in the presence of Public Health Engineering minister L Susindro and Loktak Development Authority chairman Moirangthem Asnikumar.
The programme was organised by Loktak Development Authority (LDA).
Speaking on the occasion, Biren asserted that Loktak Lake is Very iffiport ant for the people of the state and as such the state government has been taking up various initiatives to preserve and protect the Lake.
Informing that a cabinet sub-committee has been formed to further initiate preservation of the lake, he said demarcation of the area of the Lake would be carried out soon.
The CM maintained that the state government would make sure that the local people do not face any hardship during the rejuvenation work, adding that various steps have been taken up considering the necessity to save the Lake.
Various floating huts have been removed, though they were beautiful, he said and also stressed the need for setting up huts in systematic and hygienic ways, so that the environment of the Lake is not affected.
Expressing concern over the deteriorating condition of the Lake, Biren directed the government officials to work sincerely and transparently in order to bring development in the state.
He urged officials to do held visits rather than just performing table work.
Maintaining that the government will deliver what it promises, the CM expressed appreciation of the locals residing near the lake for their support and cooperation in the efforts to preserve it.
He further informed that Asian Development Bank would provide financial support to the state in developing Loktak Lake into a world class tourist destination.
He also informed that representatives of G20 countries would be visiting the state in February next year and the government is speeding up the cleaning work of the lake so the visiting could witness a clean Loktak Lake.
LDA chairman M Asnikumar said that various development efforts have been taken up to preserve the lake under the initiative of CM Biren.
The beauty of the lake, which is now known as an eco-tourism hotspot, has been able to attract tourists from across the globe, he said.
He continued that the state is coming up with a master plan to rejuvenate the lake with a long-term approach with support from Asian Development Bank and expressed hope that Loktak Lake will become an iconic site in Southeast Asia through the efforts of LDA.
Project director and officials of LDA and local residents around the lake also attended the programme.
