Protesters demand action against rape accused

Imphal, April 21 2018:
Volunteers of Youth Forum for Protection of Human Rights, locals and family members of victim of Thanga gang rape case gathered to protest in front of Juvenile Justice Board Bishnupur district near Maibam Lokpa Ching, Bishnupur today, demanding justice for the 14 year old girl victim and to arrest those who are allegedly involved in protecting the accused.
The protesters raised several slogans reading "No bail for rapists", "Arrest politician involved in protecting accused", "Terminate police officers for protecting accused" etc, conveyed a press release issued by Youth's Forum for Protection of Human Rights president.
The protesters condemned the action of IO for allegedly misbehaving and giving psychological harassment to the victim's family.
Later, Bishnupur police and Nambol police prevented the protest from getting out of hand, it stated.
It can be recalled that a minor girl was allegedly gang raped after four youths kidnapped and sedated her on February 13 before abandoning her near a hill at Thanga, the press statement added.
It further claimed that three out of the four youths have been arrested but one is being protected allegedly by a politician as the fourth accused happened to be his (the politician) brother in law although he was identified by the victim before the SIT.
The protesters as well as the family members appealed the Chief minister and DGP to arrest the person protecting the accused, to terminate the police officers who are also allegedly backing the accused, to transfer the Court to an Adult Court as the accused are eligible for the trial at an Adult Court and to change the IO assigned for the incident for allegedly misbehaving with the victim's family.
