Imphal, December 20 2011:
Condemning the killing of Chowkidar of Irilbung Water Supply Scheme Soram Ibomcha and his son Yaiphu, Ethno Heritage Council (HERICOUN) has termed it as an act of terrorism and called upon all the UG groups to ensure such inhuman killings never recur.
In a statement issued by its Secretary of Publicity and Propaganda Laishram Sanajaoba Meetei, Hericoun observed that launching of agitation by staff of PHED in the aftermath of the killing would have been more meaningful if they took recourse to such move while the two victims were still alive.
It would also more befitting on the part the employees' union of PHED to review its stand of stopping water supply as it causes more suffering to the people and consider other options that could give an impact on the administrators and the government departments.
The negligent attitude of the Chief Engineers of the department and the Minister concerned after the poor Chowkidar and his son have been abducted is despicable and it shows their irresponsibility.
It is also the failure of intelligence of the Home Department that the father-son duo could not be rescued even after 10 days of captivity, HERICOUN contended.
Decrying the culture of calling bandh, blockade, general strike, etc over any killing, HERICOUN pointed out that exemption of education from the purview of 36-hour general strike being called by one UG group is no respite for students as there is no transport service.
Moreover, the general strike would create problem to the daily wage earners as well as to the Christians who are due to celebrate Christmas on December 25, HERICOUN further pointed out, while appealing for reviewing the decision of going ahead with general strike at this juncture.
