Imphal, August 16 2020:
The All Manipur Students' Union has expressed strong abhorrence against conferring the Chief Minister's Police Medal for Gallantry for 2020 to one Imphal East Commando SI who was arrested for smuggling drugs worth more than Rs 3 crore in 2013 .
A press release issued by AMSU said that the SI was arrested along with an 11-member team of Manipur Police Commando at Pallel on the way to Moreh along with Respified tablets and Pseudoephedrine tablets worth Rs 3,64,02,00 in international market on April 28, 2013, and an FIR was registered at Kakching police station under section 21/29 of the ND&PS Act and the 27 Arms Act.
The same person was listed in serial number 6 of the Chief Minister's Police Medal for Gallantry as notified on August 12 .
AMSU could not understand how the Chief Minister who eloquently elaborates on the 'War Against Drugs' during his official address on the Independence Day ceremony could confer gallantry award to such a police personnel caught red handed for drug trafficking, it remarked.
It then demanded a high level enquiry into the antecedents of all the police personnel who were conferred gallantry awards this year and strip the awards if any of them is found involved in heinous crimes like drug trafficking.
It further prayed that the much vaunted 'War Against Drugs' is not turned into 'War for Drugs' .
