Imphal, May 15 2020:
The All Manipur Advanced Farmers' Association has appealed the State Government to ban the import of fruits from outside the State, following the earlier decision to ban import of fruits from Myanmar, which coincided with fencing the porous Indo-Myanmar border due to outbreak of COVID-19.Citing one advantage of the lockdown, AMAFA asserted that to overcome foodgrains shortage in the State all the local farmers have started first planting many vegetables-yaingang (turmeric), ginger, maize, pulses, lady's finger among others with the arrival of monsoon.
Moreover, import of onion, garlic, tomatoes and chillies from outside the State including Myanmar can be stopped, since these items grew in abundance here from ancient time and were produced on a large scale, said Henthoiba Mangang, secretary, AMAFA.
Recalling the abundant stock of foodstuff at Koireng-Kei, Monshang-Kei, Lamphel-Kei and Wangoo-Kei during the early periods, AMAFA started the endeavour to increase local productions.
