NESO demands Centre's attention to NE region, submits memo

NESO along with students organisation leaders from all the North East States organised a press meet at Press Club of India, New Delhi on October 10, deliberating on different issues pertaining in the North East region including the Manipur University impasse and the issue of BP 81.AMSU's Sinam Prakash and Manjit Sarangthem were present as well.
The student leaders, under the aegis of North East Students Organisation (NESO) met the Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju while, a 13 points memorandum was submitted to Rajnath and Rijiju.
Kiren Rijiju has conveyed that he had discussed the matter with MHRD before and will assured to address the matter again.
Speaking to media persons at Press Club of India, New Delhi, Samuel B Iyrwa said that NESO brought up various issues like education sector of the NE States, alarming influx of non-indigenous people to the region, international boundary issues, need for a separate time zone for the NE States, implementation of economic and infrastructural development projects in the region in accordance with the Act East policy, issues of the Indo-Bangla Land Swap Deal 2011 and the issue of providing staple VISA S to the people of Arunachal Pradesh visiting China.
The team apprised the Union Home Minister regarding the issues at Manipur University as well as the failure to appoint VCs for the Central Universities in the NE region on time, repealing AFSPA 1958, The Assam Disturbed Areas Act 1955, The Assam Maintenance of Public Order (Autonomous District) Act 1953, NSA 1980 and Punjab State Security Act 1953 .
They further urged the Union Home Minister to implement NRC for the NE States, condemned the Citizenship Amendment Bill 2016 and urged for the implementation of an Inner Line Permit system for the whole NE region.
NESO also demanded an immediate end to the BP 81 issue and demanded a special Constitutional status for the NE region and to take up necessary steps to ensure employment for the youths of the region.
NESO is formed by the collection of Khasi Students' Union, Garo Students' Union, All Assam Students' Union, All Manipur Students' Union, Naga Students' Federation, Mizo Zirlai Pawl, Twipra Students' Federation and All Arunachal Pradesh Students Union.
