Imphal, June 12 2013:
Chief Minister Okram Ibobi has stated that the State Government is constantly making efforts to improve the existing power sector by putting up new infrastructures and introducing pre-paid billing system in some districts with large number of consumers.
He was replying to a Calling Attention Motion raised by MLA Th Shyamkumar in connection with the electrocution of three cows by a low hanging High Tension (HT) power cable line in a paddy field in Imphal East district sometime earlier during the third day sitting of the ongoing 5th Session of 10th Manipur Legislative Assembly today.
The Chief Minister said that the electrocution of three cows happened while the Electricity Department was trying to fix the poles of HT Line which were damaged during storm.
He further stated that the State government has taken up necessary measures to improve power sector of the State.
The State is currently spending about Rs.18 crores in purchasing power and bill collection from consumers has also been increased with the introduction of pre-paid billing system.
The Chief Minister informed the House that the pre-paid billing system would also be introduced in some districts where there are a large number of power consumers.
Stringent drives have also been conducted in Thoubal to check unauthorized consumers and defaulters, he added.
Raising the Calling Attention Motion, MLA Shyamkumar contended that sheer negligence of the officials of Electricity Department led to the electrocution of three cows at Takhok Loukon.
The matter would have been worse if men were killed instead of the cows, the MLA observed, while asserting that a person was also electrocuted at Top Chingtha sometime earlier due to negligence of the Electricity Department.
He further drew the attention of the authorities concerned to take up necessary steps as soon as possible whenever people complain about damaged HT Lines and save valuable lives and assets.
