Imphal, May 12 2014 :
For Ibemhal, like most of the people residing in and around Loktak lake, fishing is the main occupation for livelihood.
Apart from being only the bread earner in her family, Ibemhal is looking after the education of her four children and doing other needful for the family.
But after the quantity of fishes she could catch from the lake has decreased considerably over the years, she is now in worry.
As fishing is the only job known to her, today she does not know what to do.

Talking to Hueiyen Lanpao, Ibemhal cited sudden extensive clearance of phumdis and dismantling of residential huts by Loktak Development Authority (LDA) by using security persnnel and hovercrafts as the main reasons for the downfall of fishing business.
Many fishermen/women who are mostly from Thingom Komjao situated around 10 kms north east of Thanga Karang have been reduced to homeless following the massive drive of the LDA, she pointed.
''In earlier times, fishermen used to earn around Rs 20, 000-30, 000 per month from the fishes they catch but now it has been reduced to Rs 10, 000 per month, that also after putting in all hard effort'', she said.
