Doctors protest against assault

Doctors in the state under the banner of the 'Meghalaya Medical Services Association (MMSA)' Sunday decided to stage a two-day cease work from 9 am of October 10 as a mark of protest on the inaction of the government against the erring police personnel involved in assaulting a medical officer of Chokpot PHC.
"We will temporarily abstain from our place of work for two days to protest against the deliberate inaction of the government," MMSA general secretary Dr A War said here.
Submitting a memorandum to the Commissioner and Secretary in charge of Health & Family Welfare Department about the agitation, Dr War said, "The members of the association will also refrain from any kind of Medical Practice on these two days" .
He said, "Government is requested to make alternative arrangements to ensure smooth delivery of health services to the public during the course of protest" .
The MMSA is demanding the government for penal action as well as immediate drawal of disciplinary proceedings including placing the erring police personnel under suspension immediately.
However, the government have not communicated this basic request to uphold the law, Dr War said.
It may be recalled that Dr Walesa N.Sangma, Medical Officer of Chokpot Primary Health Centre (PHC) was assaulted on Sept 25 last by 15 police of the 2nd Battalion after he was being arrested by them.
15 police involved in assaulting Dr.Sangma include Kennedy Marak, Elberth Momin, Manoj Sangma, Kebith Marak, Dewind Sangma, Habil Singh Bebith Sangma, Diuplera Sangma, Santosh Singh, Kreterson Marak, John Bareh, Md Mustaffa Miah, Tengnang Marak, Sengbath Sangma and Marktengbirth Marak.
The Superintendent of Police, South Garo Hills district have also suspended these 15 police and at the same time the Deputy Commissioner have also appointed a magistrate to investigate on this issue.
