Thoubal, January 07 2021:
RK Khogendrajit, Joint Director of Veterinary Department, Thoubal, has claimed that African swine fever (ASF) is not a zoonotic disease, however, utmost precaution is advised as there is no vaccine for the disease.
Briefing media persons at his office, the Joint Director continued that a laboratory at Bhopal has confirmed the sample collected from a piggery farm at Salungpham to be of African swine flu.
The sample was sent by the State Disease Laboratory upon receiving a report that about 70 pigs died in the locality (Salungpham) within a short interval, he added.
RK Khogendrajit further stated that District Magistrate, Thoubal, on December 2 last year, declared Kangyambem, Lokchao and Salungpham Mamang Leikai under Thoubal district as control areas for African swine fever to contain the virus spread.
By fixing Shairesh Multiple Farm in Salungpham as an epicentre, the department has classified areas within a radius of 9 kilometre from the farm into three zones - infected zone (within a radius of 1 km), surveillance zone (within a radius of 9 km) and free zone for surveillance, he said and added that the department is monitoring the areas within the zones round the clock by constituting a special team.
