'Not child lifters'

Inspector Lunhkhosat, OC of Saikul PS, has clarified that the two individuals who were beaten up by some youth on suspicion of being child lifters as well as for being cannibals, was unfounded and are undergoing treatment at RIMS.
When inquired about the incident by a group of media persons, Inspector Lunhkhosat stated that the two individuals were found by the local elders at two different locations yesterday along with injuries on their body suspectedly caused by some youth who thrashed them on suspicions ofbeing child lifters.
He said that one of them was found along Sagolmang to Saikul road and the other one was found near Saikul village.
Their identities were not known to the villagers and as such they were handed over to Saikul PS for proper verification.
Due to the injuries on their bodies, they were sent to the Saikul PHC for treatment from the police station.
When enquired by the police team both the individuals did not reveal anything but the doctor on duty informed the OC yesterday that one of the individuals (with long hair) claimed that his name is Indrajit and he is from Cachar.
The OC further said that after the arrival of SDPO Kangpokpi and the improving condition of the injured individuals, they were both taken to RIMS for further treatment.
On the other hand, the OC also clarified that there is no such case of cannibalism in the area and it is just a rumour which has been circulated on social media.
The police is working to properly verify the two individuals as both of them did not have any kind of documents on them, he added.
He also said that due to the rumours of child lifters in other parts of the country and the rumours of presence of some child lifters in their area, the villagers used to take look out duties along the roads and in their village as precautionary measures for the past few days.
The OC explained that the two incidents might be related as the villagers might have thought the two individuals to be child lifters and assaulted them as they were unknown in the area.
SP Kangpokpi, Hemant Pandey also clarified that the two individuals are not cannibals and so far no complaints have been lodged by any person or any group.
