Imphal, November 03 2015:
Former Manipur Police Special DGP (Intelligence) Santosh Macherla, whose tenure ended on October 31 last, was given a memorable farewell on Tuesday at the banquet hall of Manipur Rifles.
The farewell party, which was organised by Police Headquarters, was attended by prominent officers and personnel of Manipur Police Department.
While bidding adieu to the officer, he received enormous accolade from the Government for his big contribution to the department.
Even as the State Government paid adequate attention to organising such grand send-off functions for officers hailing from outside the State, sources from within the department and others who had retired but did not want to be identified have expressed dismay with the way how such functions meant for officers hailing from Manipur has been underplayed by the Government.
Officers from the State who had immensely contributed to the police department and those who made great sacrifices were not given befitting honour and respect like those who hailed from outside the State, alleged the sources.
They further alleged that it has become a part of Manipur Government's tradition to accord scant respect to top decorated officers hailing from the State.
Whenever any top officers of the department hailing from the State retired, the Government had always failed to organise "honourable farewell parties", said the sources.
This has led to not only a demoralizing effect on the retired officers but also sent a wrong signal to those who had already spent the best years of their lives keeping the morale of the police high.
It may be recalled that former DGP of Manipur Police Y Joykumar retired in August 31, 2013; former Manipur Inspector General of Police (IGP) G Bimolchandra Sharma (IPS) retired on January 31 last; former CID, Crime Branch SP S Chaoba retired on May 31 last; former Special Investigation Team (SIT) SP Potsangbam Dhanakumar (IPS) retired on August 31 last while former Manipur Police ADGP Ahanthem Romenkumar (IPS) retired in January 31, 2009.However, none of them were given the farewell and the honour they deserved, said the sources.
If the police department itself fails to respect and recognise their own top personnel when they retire, how such a department is expected to respect the public, asked the sources.
