PEP vaccine to prevent Leprosy launched

In connection with the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the year long Sparsh Leprosy Elimination Campaign concluded today, in a function organised by National Leprosy Eradication Programme and State Leprosy Unit Manipur at Medical Directorate Lamphel.
During the campaign, Focus Leprosy camp, essay competition, SLEC awareness and other activities were organised.
On the other hand, door-to -door surveys were conducted at seven villages of the State as well.
Speaking at the function, Director Health Services Manipur Dr K Rajo maintained that although Leprosy is curable, its treatment process should be initiated early in order to prevent prolonged illness.
He urged all to be aware that Leprosy is a communicable disease and that it can be treated successfully.
People gathered from different parts of the State along with students of RIMS took out a rally in connection with the event.
Meanwhile, Post Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP), a vaccine used to prevent Leprosy was launched for the first time in the State and administered the vaccine to selected persons.
A prize distribution ceremony was also held for winners of the essay competition.
