Imphal, June 23 2022:
The state government has urged the ministry of home affairs for partial suspension of border fencing works along the Indo-Myanmar border citing strong opposition froth UCM over shifting of border pillars from their original location into the Indian side.
In a letter addressed to the union home secretary dated June 22, special secretary (home) H Gyan Prakash said that United Committee Manipur (UCM), a civil society organisation, is vehemently opposing the construction of the border fence on the allegation that some of the border pillars especially BP 81 and BP 82 have been relocated deep into the Indian side from the actual international border.
"UCM gathered in large number in a market area on Wednesday and the state police had to resort to firing of tear gas shells to disperse the crowd.
UCM has also announced to continue agitation on Thursday in various parts of the state and has even threatened to recruit suicidal teams in the process," the special secretary mentioned in his letter to MHA.
The letter further stated that the law and order situation in the state may worsen in the coming days due to opposition against the ongoing border fencing work by BRO along Indo-Myanmar boundary from BP 79 to BP 81 covering a length of 10 (ten) kms from Moreh to Kwatha while urging the ministry to direct the BRO to suspend the border fencing work where the position of border pillar is disputed especially BP 81 and 82 until the dispute is resolved through dialogue.
The letter also requested the ministry to depute a team of MHA officials and Survey of India for holding a thorough discussion regarding position of the disputed BPs.
Border fencing in other undisputed areas may be allowed to continue, the letter added.
