With the recent report of UNESCO (List of Endangered Languages in the Online Version of the World Atlas of Endangered Language - vis-a-vis census- 2009) which classified the Tarao dialect as one of the extinct languages suggesting either dilution or nonexistence of the tribe, the Tarao community leaders, concerned with Tarao population, urged the Government to take up steps to safeguard the community from extinction.
"It is sad to know the report of the UNESCO which reflects the dwindling population of the tribe.
It is high time for the Government to intervene and take up necessary steps to save and encourage the growth of the tribe," said chairman of Tarao Art and Culture L Morir Tarao.
Speaking to media persons, the chairman claimed that the current population of the tribe is just 524.Tarao tribes are scattered at Laimanai, Leishokching, Kuringmur, Heikakpokpi and Ukhrul district.
There are only about 12 Tarao household in Ukhrul.
Of the total only about 200 are youth, he said seeking the attention of the Government.
The chairman lauded the UNESCO Club Manipur Chapter and its joint director Dr Th Chandramani for supporting the cause of the Tarao tribe.
