Imphal, April 16 2019:
The first ever lifesaving interventional radiological (IR) treatment for fatal bleeding during/after childbirth was successfully carried out in Shija Hospitals & Research Institute Pvt Limited.
This decisive emergency treatment was performed for first time in Manipur by Dr Thangjam Gautam, Consultant Neuro, Body & Vascular Interventional Radiologist.
Bleeding during childbirth is one of the most common causes of death of a mother in this country.
Severe bleeding, which cannot be managed conservatively require hysterectomy (removal of uterus) to stop the bleeding and save the mother's life, said a press release issued by Dy Manager-Business Development, Shija Hospitals & Research Institute Pvt Ltd.
It maintained that if the uterus is removed, further pregnancy is not possible.
Now, with the help of a new pin hole interventional radiological (IR) treatment called, 'Uterine bleeding Embolization/Uterine artery embolization', the bleeding can be stopped immediately and save the uterus at the same time.
In such instance, the treatment saved the life of a young mother suffering from bleeding inside her abdomen/pelvis following a Caesarean section.
It further stated that she was initially managed conservatively with medicine including blood transfusion but the bleeding could not be controlled.
She was operated again and her uterus (womb) was removed with ligation (tying up) of the uterine arteries.
But her bleeding continued even after the surgery.
If bleeding was not stopped urgently then her life was in a great danger.
Mentioning that the patient was referred from an outside hospital to Shija Hospitals, it added that the patient was immediately transferred from Shija Emergency & Trauma Unit to the Cathlab.
Several bleeding arteries were detected during Pelvic angiography done using the Cathlab DSA machine and all the bleeding arteries were completely blocked (without any open surgery) using the pin hole interventional technique, it stated.
As such, her life was saved from the most dangerous complications of childbirth and was discharged from the hospital after three days.
On the other hand, it is worth mentioning that in the last one year, Dr Thangjam Gautam saved the lives of seven women suffering from severe bleeding following childbirth, D & C, uterine AVM/pseudoaneurysm, and hysterectomy.
He also has the credit of saving the lives of numerous patients in the State from severe life threatening bleeding inside the intestine, lungs, kidney, and liver through the pin hole IR treatment.
Meanwhile, advantages of this new IR treatment include accurate detection of bleeding vessels and immediate blockage, it said and added that the process is a painless and non-open surgical treatment and that there is no need for uterus removal.
