Imphal, February 12 2019:
Warning both the State and Central Government that an incident more catastrophic than that of June 18, 2001 (which burnt down Manipur Legislative Assembly and several Government quarters) might occur in the State if the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016 is passed in Rajya Sabha, Manipur University Students' Union (MUSU) has appealed the Governments to understand the sentiments of the people of the State and to refrain from passing the Bill.
The students' union also demanded the Chief Minister, Ministers and all MLAs to resign immediately if they cannot stand against the Bill and if they can no longer save the people of the State.
Speaking to reporters on the sideline of a protest demonstration against Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016 near the front gate of Manipur University today, MUSU president Keisham Lebanon asserted that the students union has been tolerating and staying away from the issue of the Bill for quite a long time in view of the Academic purpose of the varsity.
But the students' union can no longer tolerate the issue as the BJP is consistently trying to pass the Bill in the Rajya Sabha following its passage in the Lok Sabha on January 8.It seems that the BJP is completely sidelining the sentiments of the people of the North East States, including Manipur, regarding the Bill, he alleged.
Meanwhile, the Chief Minister, Ministers and the MLAs in the State are not being bold enough and also seem to lack courage to stand against the Bill so far.
If they cannot fight for the people and protect them (people), then they should resign immediately as they no longer have the capabilities of being the elected representatives of the people, he added.
He then appealed all the elected representatives to fight tooth and nail against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill by knowing the desires and sentiments of the people while warning that there may be outcomes which are far more severe than that of June 18, 2001 .
The MUSU volunteers protested against the Bill by shouting various slogans like "Go Back BJP, Down Down BJP" and "Withdraw CAB 2016".They also hoisted black flags and burnt tires to block the road during their protest.
