NIPCCD sensitizes media persons on child issues

With an aim to make media personnel more acquaint on the issues related to children and exploitation of their rights in the north eastern states of India, National Institute of Public Cooperation and Child Development, Regional Center, Guwahati (NIPCCD) organized a two-day long 'sensitization training for media personnel on issues relating to child rights & protection' at its Conference Hall at Jawaharnagar here from March 7 to 8. Addressing the inaugural function of the training programme, S G Kashyap Special Correspondent, Indian Express, who spoke on the topic 'situation analysis of children in India with special reference to North East India' as a resource person, said that social turmoil and violence in the entire north eastern parts of India has reached to such a level that children have not seen people dying of natural death.
"Due to the constant violence in the region, Children are living under violence especially in Manipur and Assam for more than two decades," Kashyap said.
Citing a report from National Human Rights Commission, he noted that around 44,000 children are missing every year in the country and out of which only 33,000 are able to trace back mainly by their parents.
On the other hand, about 200 girls joined prostitution each day while 53.22% and 36% of children face sexual abuse and are forced to show their private parts respectively in the country.
Stating that human rights are inalienable and indivisible for all, another resource person Ved Prakash Gautam, Child Protection Specialist, UNICEF, who talked on the topic 'concept of child rights and protection' said, "India is both the source and transit of human trafficking and80% of the women were trafficked when they are much younger.
On the other hand, children have lost their individuality as we protect and expect much from them." During the training programme, resource persons from various media houses and eminent child rights activists talked on various issues relating to child rights protection, status of Juvenile Justice Act, Right to Education, and other Acts pertaining to children.
On the second and valedictory function of the training session all the delegates, resource persons and officials of NIPCCD jointly chalked out a strategy for media for safeguarding the rights of the child.
NIPCCD also handed out certificates to all the participants on the successful completion of the training.
A total number of 24 media persons from Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Odisha, and other North and Eastern parts of the country participated in the training session.
