Imams' meet bans drugs, CM hails

A joint meeting of Imams along with Ulma and Hafiz of different localities held on Monday resolved to put a total ban on drugs in all Meetei Pangal inhabited areas of the state, and submit a copy of the resolution to chief minister N Biren.
Meanwhile, welcoming the decision, chief minister N Biren said that the Meitei Pangal community has created a historic moment by declaring unwavering support to the War on Drugs campaign.
As per resolutions adopted in the meeting, the Muslim clerics agreed to extend full support to the government's War on Drugs campaign and to form alliance with Masjid committees, and take up strict measures to ban drug abuse and illegal trade of drugs in their respective areas.
The meeting also agreed to create awareness on drug abuse and illegal trade by the Imams by reading out texts from Quran and Hadith before Juma Namaj, and not to perform Namaj or any other rituals for any individual who indulges in such activities.
They also agreed to empower different CSOs like ANJUMAN, ALADA, ICRO, ASPO and CDO among others in their fight against drugs.
The meeting further resolved to urge the chief minister and the WAQF Board chairman to establish rehabilitation centre with capacity of 400 to 500 inmates in Lilong area and to organise a series of discussion programmes on War on Drugs 2.0 in Meetei Pangal inhabited areas.
While speaking during a press briefing at his Durbar Hall on Monday, Biren described decision of the Meetei Pangal leaders as an important turning point in the War on Drugs campaign, which was initiated in June 2018.In the initial days, the campaign could not gain much momentum.
Today, the campaign is witnessing traction and support from various stakeholders, CSOs, he added.
The campaign has garnered support lately, he asserted, while highlighting the voluntary support gained from almost all the communities of the hill districts in recent times against poppy plantation.
This is the beginning of a new chapter in the campaign against drugs, he said.
He urged the Meetei Pangal leaders to directly deal with MLA Abdul Nasir for any issues while assuring of full support from the side of the government.
They can also contact him (the CM) if they have any suspicion regarding conduct of any police personnel in the fight against drugs.
The CM also assured of establishing a Rehabilitation Centre in Lilong area, once a suitable land is identified and made available.
Biren also called for a united fight against drugs and eradication of illegal drugs from Manipur.
Lilong MLA Md Abdul Nasir, Keirao MLA L Rameshwor Meetei, along with several Imams and community leaders accompanied the Chief Minister during the press briefing.
Earlier, the joint meeting of Imams and community leaders of Meetei Pangal organised by WAQF Board Manipur at Madrassa Alia, Lilong was attended by Lilong MLA and WAQF Board chairman Abdul Nasir, Jamiatul Ulama-E-Hind Manipur president Moulana Sayeed Ahmed, Anjuman coordinator Moulana Muheiyuddin among others as presidium members.
Speaking on the occasion, MLA Abdul Nasir called for supporting the government's War on Drugs campaign in order to ensure a peaceful future.
He also assured of providing Rs 2 lakh fund for launching drive against drugs.
Those, who attended the meeting, expressed their views on the negative impact of drug trafficking and drug abuse, especially among the youth which would eventually lead to a failed society and stressed the need for stringent measures to stop such practices and set up a mega rehabilitation centre to bring back addicts into normal life.
