'State lost over 50 pc of spring '

Deputy Director of Directorate of Environment cum Nodal Officer of State Climate Change Cell, Dr T Brajakumar has asserted that over 50pc of natural springs found in the State have either dried up or vanished.
He said this during a brain storming session participated by experts from Forest Department, PWD, MU, Water Resources Department, NIT, MAHUD and other States held at Hotel Imphal yesterday.
He continued that deficit rainfall is one of the reason behind the lost of springs at a vast scale and turning many perennial springs into seasonal springs.
Out of 2111 villages in the State, nearly 1385 use spring water for daily requirements, he added.
Public Health Engineering Department, Chief Enginneer L Swamikanta also spoke at the event and stressed on the adverse affect of deforestation on environment while Director of Directorate of Environment, Dr Y Nabachandra stated that the resolution taken during the session will be added in the State Action Plan on Climate Change Version 2 .
Member of the Mumbai based NGO "Advance Centre for Water Resources Development and Management", Imran Siddique explained about the initiative taken up in other States to preserve springs.
He also said that as per the report of Niti Aayog approximately 60 pc of people from Himalayan States depends on spring water for their livelihood.
