Repairing of weak embankments soon: Awangbow

Water resources min ister Awangbow Newmai has said that weak and precarious river embankments in Imphal area will be renovated before the onset of rainy season to prevent flood.
Awangbow disclosed this on the sidelines of inspecting the frail Imphal river embankment at Heingang Mayai Leikai Thokchom Leirak under Heingang assembly constituency on Monday.
He was accompanied by water resource department chief engineer Songput N Albert, executive engineer FCD 1 Ningthoujao Remmei and other officials of the department during the inspection.
On the sidelines of the inspection visit, minister Awangbow told media per sons that construction of per manent river embankment requires time and fund and hence priority will be given to construct immediate structures to prevent flood as of now.
He also said that steps have been taken to renovate vulnerable embankments of rivers flowing in Imphal area and the repair works will begin soon.
The department is conducting survey of exposed river embankments in Imphal area to take up steps for renovation before the advent of rainy season.
Spot enquiry is being conducted for the first time on Monday along Imphal river at Heingang Mayai Leikai area upon getting a report.
He further said that dredging of river beds will be taken up based on report of technical study by experts on the matter.
Mention may be made here that the spot where minister Awangbow made inspection on Monday has been gradually sinking since the past five months or so and the spot remains accident prone as most of the embankment has collapsed and the road has been closed.
