Womenfolk stage sit-in against Citizenship Amendment Bill 2016

Womenfolk of Wangkhei Angom Leikai, under the aegis of Women Social Welfare Association (WSWA), staged a sit-in protest today against the Citizenship Amendment Bill 2016 recently passed in the Lok Sabha.
Speaking at the sit-in, president WSWA Angom Ibetombi said that the Bill is a threat to the existence of the indigenous people of the North-East and preservation of the indigenous tradition and culture.
Saying that the Bill violates the secular structure of the Constitution of India, she added that the association is ready to support any future agitation of the CSOs and students against the Bill.
She stated that the Bill is against the aspiration of the people of the State and the North-East as a whole and demanded that the Bill be withdrawn in the interest of the people of the North-East.
It may be mentioned that the contentious Citizenship Amendment Bill 2016 cleared the Lok Sabha on January 8.CSOs, student organisations across North-East India have been staging protests for removal of the Bill since.
The Bill is yet to undergo test at the Rajya Sabha before becoming an Act.
