Imphal, December 02 2022:
As part of the ongoing protest launched by Scheduled Tribe Demand Committee, Manipur (STDCM) for forwarding the recommendation to grant recognition to the Meitei/Meetei community in the Scheduled Tribe (ST) list of the Constitution of India, members of CSOs under the aegis of Coordinating Body of Scheduled Tribe Demand Committee submitted a memorandum to Kumbi MLA S Premchandra at his Mongsangei residence on Friday.
Accepting the memorandum, MLA Premchandra said that it would be a good step for all indigenous communities of the state to work towards promoting the unique identity of the state.
Although our identity was temporarily lost because of certain historical incidents, the demand for inclusion of Meetei in the ST list is justified, he said, while expressing his complete support to the movement.
He also urged all concerned to respect another and work together for a better society and reminded that we should never forget that we are the descendants of Bir Tikendrajit, Thangal General, Paona Brajabasi and other brave heroes who sacrificed their lives to protect the integrity and freedom of the state.
Thus, we should always work for the welfare of the society and the state, he asserted.
Later, the representatives shouted slogans demanding inclusion of Meetei/Meitei in the ST list and for state government to forward the recommendation to the central government as the latter had advised.
