Imphal, March 02 2015:
A protest rally planned by VDF (Village Defence Force) personnel to push for their demands was foiled by police on Monday.
Around 400 VDF personnel under the banner of the All Manipur VDF Welfare Association (AMVWA) converged at Tera Bazar in Imphal West district around 10 am with a plan to carry out a protest rally on the streets in Imphal.
When the rally was about to start, a large number of police personnel who rushed to the spot prevented them from carrying out the rally.
They were detained for hours until they dispersed themselves in the afternoon.

The VDF personnel in uniform, who were also holding placards that highlighted their key demands like honorarium hike and a separate battalion for the force, planned to storm the Assembly complex where session was in progress.
A member of the AMVWA said that they gathered there with a plan to march a rally towards Assembly site and submit a memorandum containing a list of their demands to the Speaker.
A group of representatives of the association led by its president Devan and general secretary S Ravi Singh were allowed to proceed with a team of police to submit the memorandum to the Speaker of the Assembly.
Citing the key demands in the list, he added that they were pressing the State Government to increase the monthly honorarium to Rs 10,000 and to open a separate battalion for VDF to be headed by a Superintendent of Police.
Justifying their demands, the AMVW member said that they were discharging their duties on Sundays and holidays just like the police personnel.
He said several memorandums have been submitted to the Governor, Chief Minister, Home Minister and Director General of Police, but the leaders are not paying heed to the demands.
