Imphal, May 30 2023:
Categorically stating that the ethnic crisis besieging the State is a direct fallout of Kuki militants SoO turning their weapons to the Meitei community, the All Manipur United Clubs' Organisation (AMUCO) has asked Union Home Minister Amit Shah to abrogate SoO.
Amit Shah held a meeting with several CSOs, student organisations and intellectuals at the Chief Minister's Secretariat today.
AMUCO president Nando Luwang too attended the meeting and submitted a memorandum.
Amit Shah was told that the SoO ought to be abrogated as the Kuki militants have started targeting the general public, Nando said.
As long as SoO remains in force and the Kuki militants are not reined in, there would be tension and unrest in the society, AMUCO told the Union Home Minister.
As the Government of India's hope of bringing peace has been belied, New Delhi ought to revoke the SoO pact, Nando said.
A detailed argument on whether SoO should remain in force or abrogated was presented in the memorandum submitted to the Union Home Minister, he said.
On the people's demand for implementation of NRC in the State, Amit Shah stated that installation of machines has been started at different places for identification of illegal migrants and prevention of illegal immigration.
On being enquired about poppy cultivation by migrant Kukis in cahoots with Kuki militant groups under SoO, Amit Shah said that the question of poppy is an issue of the Government of India and BJP, Nando Luwang conveyed.
