Imphal, July 28 2022:
Six student bodies (AMSU, AIMS, DE SAM, KSA, MSF and SUK) organised a protest in the form of human chain near Kwakeithel Tiddim Ground on Thursday demanding the government to discuss the demand of setting up Manipur Language Commission, translation of reference book in Meetei script by setting up a translation committee and NRC update, in the ongoing state assembly session.
Interacting with the media during the pro test, DESAM president Leishangthem Lamyan ba said that the three demands are among the 6 points mentioned in the charter of demands submitted by the student bodies and the gov ernment should take a decision in this regard during the ongoing state assembly session.
Meetei Mayek had replaced Bengali scripts up to Master Level and the students are facing a major issue of shortage of reference books.
The same situation will also become major issue in NET and research works by next year.
In-spite of the imminent situation, there is no reference books in Meetei Mayek in any of the colleges and universities of the state.
As a result, students are hiring DTP workers to transcribe reference books in Meetei Mayek.
The government is also ignoring the matter and the student bodies strongly decry such indifferent attitude of the government, Lamyanba said.
He also spoke about the population imbalance and demographic issues while emphasising on the need for updating NRC and setting up a population commission.
